Just read on the Guardian site (www.guardian.co.uk) that the Government have finally agreed amongst themselves on a proposal to make carbon reduction legally binding.  David Cameron is clearly determined to deliver on his promise of leading the greenest ever Government!  According to guardian.co.uk:

Cabinet ministers have agreed a far-reaching, legally binding “green deal” that will commit the UK to two decades of drastic cuts in carbon emissions. The package will require sweeping changes to domestic life, transport and business and will place Britain at the forefront of the global battle against climate change.

Whatever your detailed thoughts on Climate Change, this has to be good news in the long run.  The big question in my mind, however, is how are we actually going to achieve this?  After all, there’s only so much that can be achieved by travelling less, using video-conferencing etc.  The reality is that, if the Government is serious about these targets, we are going to have to change the way we do so much of what we currently take for granted.

Again, this is going to take more than finding and developing alternative, renewable energy sources.  Although, this would be a start!

Surely, what will be needed is a raft of technological solutions: more energy efficient car engines, better and more effective domestic heating solutions, for example.

Someone, somewhere is going to have to step up their R&D activity in order to develop those new products and solutions in time for the Government’s targets to be achieved.  For the sake of the UK economy, let’s hope that it is UK companies leading the way.
